Tegenungan Waterfall

Hidden in the jungles of Bali near Ubud is a stunning waterfall where visitors can lounge in the pool underneath, letting the thundering waters crash down around you. I took some time to ‘chase waterfalls' one morning in Ubud and visited the majestic Tegenungan Waterfall.

The Waterfall

The waterfall is located only about 10 minutes from Ubud. After paying the entrance fee of 10,000 IDR, pass all the little stands and shops selling all kinds of goods. Continue until you get to the stairs where you will descend. The path splits at one point: right will take you to a temple and left down to the waterfall. During the day, there are Balinese men near the fall with lounge chairs you can rent, but it is more fun to just jump right in! If you are a strong swimmer, you can even swim behind the falls, which is super cool.

If you want to get a closer look at the falls, and a stunning picture, cross the log bridge and follow the stairs up until you reach a perfect photo spot! You cannot jump from this point into the pool at the bottom as the water is not deep enough, but it still breathtaking to be so close to the pounding water.

If you want to avoid the crowds, it is best to visit earlier in the day. Head there a little bit before lunch, get your fill, and then climb back up the stairs and enjoy lunch with a view of the falls! I'm telling you, that view doesn't get old.

How to Get There

During my time in Ubud, I rented a motor scooter, so I followed google maps directions to the waterfall from where I was staying. It is much cheaper to travel around this way instead of paying for cabs or day trips. If you are not good with directions or are not familiar with driving a motor scooter, you can easily take a taxi ride there and back to your hotel. From Ubud, it is only about a 10 minute drive.

Once at the falls, pass the stalls and climb down the stairs. The waterfall is not handicap accessible unfortunately, but if you can climb down stairs and back up, you can easily visit the Tegenungan Waterfall! A visit will probably last no more than an hour or two.

    • Sandals are fine! For the hike down its just stairs (a lot of them!) and to go up right near the falls I think I did barefoot! Have fun!

  1. Tenegungan is just a perfect place for a tourist. We going to our Bali trip in 2 weeks and already booked a guide via http://7.holiday/ to visit this waterfall. Besides we are planning to visit Aling-Aling too. Hope it would be great.

  2. I partly agree with you. It’s right if you said that Tegenungan Waterfall is a beautiful place for relaxing our body and mind. But, it has a little bit disadvantage. That is the parking area. It’s so narrow and the ledder is too many. It made me tired to go up.

  3. Can you get to the viewpoint of the waterfall (first picture) by scooter, without climbing or descending stairs?

    • I do not unfortunately! I have been to places in Thailand that had a spiritual reason for stacking rocks but do not know if the same applies to Indonesia.
