Logan Theatre

Movies are a great way to escape reality, if only for a few hours, and travel to other worlds or even across time. One of my absolute favorite movie theaters in Chicago is the old-school Logan Theatre, located on Milwaukee avenue. This theatre, open since 1915, shows classic films as well as current blockbuster hits, and is a perfect place for a rainy day or date night.

The History

In 1915, Logan Theatre (at that time named the Paramount Theatre) opened with a single movie screen. Renamed the Logan Theatre in 1922, the family owned business was committed to serving the diverse Logan Square community.

When Logan Square underwent significant change during the construction of the CTA Blue Line, the theatre remained open and dedicated to showing movies at great prices – a legacy that the new, modern Logan Theatre continues today! During renovations, the theatre restored the interior back to the elegant details of its original 1915 debut, which are evident upon entering. Spend some time before the movie simply marveling at this living piece of history and admiring the architecture.

The Vibe

Now a renovated and modern movie theater, Logan Theatre's decor and vibe is reminiscent of its original days. When you arrive, buy a ticket at the box office underneath the old marquee. Step inside and grab some classic movie snacks or a drink at their bar. At Logan Theatre, you are more than welcome to bring any drinks purchased at the bar into the movie with you – wine juice box anyone? It also makes a great spot to meet up with friends to enjoy a few drinks before a movie.

In addition to showing movies, the theatre hosts events like a comedy night (every Monday, open mic sign up begins at 8:00 PM) and a trivia night (movie themed of course; every Tuesday at 8:00 PM). They also hold cinema series each month for their ‘Late Night at Logan' (check their website for a current schedule).

My favorite part about the theatre though is the affordable prices! Even without a deal, I feel like I don't have to pay an arm and a leg just for a movie night out. There may not be 3D effects, but the atmosphere and vibe of the theatre make up for it. Check out typical movie ticket prices below:

  • Matinee: $6.50
  • Adult: $8.50
  • Senior/Student: $7.50
  • Child: $6.50
