As a wise man once said, “Beer is proof that God loves us and wants us to be happy.” I could not agree more. Beer is, in a word, awesome. I'll take any chance I get to enjoy the adult beverage, and a deal for a brewery tour is just the excuse I need.

After making a reservation online, I arrived at Finch's Beer Company on a Saturday and joined the line of people checking in. Once inside, we received a complimentary glass to taste all the samples of beer available, and immediately got it filled with one of the three samples they had on draft. While I waited for the tour to begin, I milled about enjoying the first beer sample.

The tour was led by a Chicago Public School teacher with both a passion for and knowledge of beer. He led us through the brewery, pointing out the different tools and machinery used to make their delicious beer. It was neat to see the canning process and machines that the cans must go through to be filled with beer and then stacked and wrapped for shipping. It also reminded me how much work goes into making a really delicious brew. Many of the people on the tour had questions about brewing their own beer at home, and the tour guide provided sound advice for each of them.

Throughout the tour, we got unlimited samples of the draft and canned beers, which was obviously my absolute favorite part of the whole thing. Being able to sample beers after learning about the process seemed to make them taste even better. My personal favorites were the ales, in particular the ‘Cut Throat Pale Ale,' which was refreshing with the perfect balance of hops and malt flavors. In close second was the ‘Threadless IPA,' a gold winner at the World Expo of Beer.

At the end of the tour we got to keep our Finch's pint glass!
